The best brow tattoo technique depends on the finish you want, the brows you already have and how your skin may respond. Nano Brows and Microblading create hair-like detail; Powder/Ombré Brows create shading; Combination Brows bring strokes and shading together.

At ELKA CLINIC in Subiaco, Perth, we offer these approaches as different options, rather than treating one as the answer for everyone. This guide helps you understand the choices before discussing your own brows with us.

Start with the finish you prefer

Think about how you usually wear your brows. Do you fill individual gaps, lightly shade the whole shape, or prefer a little of both?

  • Hair-like detail: explore Nano Brows and Microblading.
  • A softly shaded finish: explore Powder/Ombré Brows.
  • Hair-like detail with added shading: explore Combination Brows.

Your preference gives us a starting point. Suitability, existing pigment and the amount of natural brow hair can change the recommendation.

The four techniques, simply explained

Nano Brows: machine-created hair strokes

Nano Brows use a cosmetic tattoo machine and fine needle to place pigment in individual, hair-like strokes. The design can follow your existing growth pattern and add detail where the brows look sparse.

This may appeal if you prefer visible spaces between strokes rather than an overall shaded finish. Pigment cannot recreate the physical texture of real hair, and strokes may soften as the tattoo heals and ages.

Explore Nano Brows.

Microblading: manually created hair strokes

Microblading uses a handheld tool with a blade-like arrangement of fine needles to create pigmented strokes manually. It also aims for hair-like definition, but the tool and application differ from Nano Brows.

ELKA offers Microblading as a separate service. Whether it is appropriate depends on individual assessment, including skin condition, existing brow hair and previous tattooing.

Powder/Ombré Brows: a shaded finish

Powder Brows use small deposits of pigment to create a softly shaded effect instead of separate hair strokes. At ELKA, Powder and Ombré describe the same treatment family. Ombré refers to the graduated appearance, typically softer at the front and more defined through the brow.

This may appeal if you enjoy the look of lightly applied brow powder. The intended depth and definition are discussed before treatment; a shaded brow does not have to be a heavy brow.

Combination Brows: strokes with shading

Combination Brows bring hair-like strokes and shading into one design. The balance between them is planned around your brows and the finish you would like.

They may appeal if you want some individual detail alongside a more filled-in shape. Combining techniques does not automatically make a treatment more suitable or longer-lasting.

What changes the recommendation?

We consider your natural brow hair, skin condition, previous cosmetic tattoo, preferred definition and expectations. Oily, textured or mature skin should be assessed individually rather than assigned a technique by category alone.

Tell us about relevant health conditions, medications, skin concerns and previous reactions. Cosmetic tattooing involves risks, including infection, allergic reactions and scarring. Choosing a particular technique does not remove those risks. Our assessment helps establish whether to proceed, adapt the plan or seek further advice.

If you already have brow tattooing, contact us before choosing a new treatment. Existing colour, shape and density can limit what is achievable. Adding strokes or shading will not necessarily disguise unwanted pigment. See our correction guide for the different possibilities.

Compare healed results, not only fresh photographs

Fresh brows can look more pronounced than the settled result. Compare clearly labelled photographs and ask which technique was used and when the image was taken.

Our Brows Gallery shows genuine ELKA work. Results vary between clients, so a photograph is a useful discussion point rather than a promise of your outcome. Follow the Brow Aftercare instructions provided for your treatment.

A few common questions

Which technique looks most natural?

Any of these approaches can be designed with a natural-looking finish in mind. Shape, colour, density, your existing hair and the healed result matter alongside the technique name.

Which lasts longest?

There is no reliable universal ranking. Retention and appearance vary with the treatment, skin, healing, skincare and sun exposure. Discuss realistic maintenance for your own brows.

Is a perfecting appointment compulsory?

A perfecting appointment is optional and charged separately. After healing, we can assess whether any refinement would be helpful.

Do I need a separate consultation?

You can book treatment directly, with assessment before proceeding. A separate consultation is optional if you would prefer to discuss your choices first. Previous tattooing or individual concerns may need assessment beforehand.

Choose your next step

You do not need to arrive with every technique decided. Bring your preferences and questions, and we can discuss what is realistic for your brows.
