Microneedling Aftercare

Microneedling Aftercare

Microneedling is a skin treatment, and the first day matters more than any other. The timings below are specific to microneedling — please do not apply the restrictions from our cosmetic tattoo guides to it.

All aftercare guides

The first 24 hours

Four stages, in order. The first one is the one that matters most.

  • First 4 hours

Keep the area completely dry. This is the minimum. No water, no face washing, no cleanser, no makeup, and no skincare products unless ELKA CLINIC has specifically applied or recommended something. Avoid touching the area unnecessarily.

  • 4 to 12 hours

Keep it dry if you can. Approximately twelve hours dry is what we would prefer. If your skin does get wet after the first four hours it is not a disaster — just keep it gentle and carry on with the guidance below.

  • After about 12 hours

Gentle water contact is fine if you need it. Cool to lukewarm water only, never hot. No rubbing, no scrubbing, no washcloths, no cleansing brushes and no exfoliating devices. Pat the skin dry. There is no need to wash repeatedly.

  • From about 24 hours

You can cleanse gently. Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser with cool or lukewarm water and clean hands. Apply it gently, do not scrub, avoid exfoliating cleansers, and pat dry.

Moisturiser and simple skincare

Less is genuinely more while the skin barrier settles.

  • If the skin feels dry or tight after the initial recovery period, use a simple, gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser.
  • Keep the routine minimal — cleanser, moisturiser, and later sunscreen.
  • Avoid heavily fragranced products, exfoliating moisturisers and complicated active routines while the skin is recovering.
  • This is not the moment to introduce a new product you have not used before.

What to avoid

Two different windows. Where the skin is still unsettled, the clock is not the deciding factor.

24 hours minimum

Makeup

No foundation, concealer, blush, powder or other makeup directly over freshly treated skin for at least 24 hours.

After that, only resume when the skin is settled and comfortable. If it is still very red, irritated, sensitive or actively flaking, wait longer — reaching hour 24 does not automatically mean your skin is ready.

72 hours

And until the skin has settled

  • Strenuous exercise and heavy sweating
  • Swimming pools, spas and hot tubs
  • Sauna and steam rooms
  • Deliberate or direct sun exposure

For swimming, spas, sauna and steam, wait 72 hours and until the skin no longer feels irritated or compromised. If it is still visibly irritated after three days, keep waiting.

Take particular care with sun while the skin is red or sensitive. We are not suggesting you can avoid daylight altogether — just avoid deliberate sun exposure, and do not use recovery time to tan.

Active skincare

These two groups come back at different times. Please do not treat them as one rule.

Vitamin C and strong active serums

About 3 to 5 days, and until settled

Keep vitamin C and other strong or potentially irritating active serums out of the routine during the immediate recovery period. Approximately three to five days is the usual guide, and until the skin feels settled.

For stronger or more acidic formulations, or if your skin is still sensitive, waiting closer to a week may suit you better.

Retinoids, acids and exfoliation

At least 7 days, and until fully settled

Keep retinol and retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, exfoliating acids, physical scrubs and exfoliating devices off the treated area for at least seven days, and until redness, sensitivity and flaking have resolved.

Seven days is the minimum, not an alarm clock. If the skin is still irritated on day seven, keep waiting.

The microneedling recovery timeline

Most of the visible recovery is over within two to four days. The part that matters, the collagen work, carries on quietly for weeks afterwards.

  • Day of treatment

Redness and warmth. Similar to mild sunburn. The skin feels tight and looks flushed. Leave it alone, keep it clean and cool, and no makeup or active skincare.

  • Day 2

The flush fades to pink. Tightness eases and the skin may feel dry. Gentle cleanser, simple moisturiser and sunscreen. Mineral makeup can usually resume if the skin is comfortable.

  • Days 3–5

Light flaking. Common as the surface renews, and the skin can look slightly dull before it looks better. Do not pick or exfoliate — picking is the most common reason a session heals unevenly.

  • Weeks 1–2

Smooth and clear. The surface settles and an early glow appears. Reintroduce active skincare only once flaking has finished and as directed.

  • Weeks 4–12

Collagen remodelling. This continues beneath the surface, and texture and scarring improve gradually. Keep sunscreen daily.

Recovery varies with the individual, the intensity of the treatment and the area treated. Deeper scar work commonly means a longer flush, sometimes with pinpoint marks for a few days, while shallower tone work often settles overnight. Treat these stages as a general guide rather than a schedule.

What is normal

Commonly reported

Expected and temporary

  • Redness and warmth
  • Mild swelling
  • Tightness
  • Tenderness
  • Dryness or a rough texture
  • Light flaking
  • Temporary sensitivity

Not everyone experiences all of these, and how much you notice depends on the intensity of your treatment.

Do not wait these out

Seek advice

  • Redness or swelling that is significantly worsening rather than settling
  • Pain that is significant or increasing
  • Discharge
  • Blistering
  • Anything that could suggest an infection
  • Any significant or unexpected reaction

This guide describes what clients commonly experience while recovering. It is not a medical assessment and it cannot diagnose anything. Symptoms that are worsening rather than settling are not simply part of normal microneedling recovery — please have them looked at.

When to contact ELKA CLINIC

If something about your recovery concerns you, get in touch. Most of the time we will simply confirm you are on track, and we would far rather hear from you early than have you wait and worry. A clear photograph taken in daylight helps, so WhatsApp is usually the quickest way to reach us.

If symptoms are significant or getting worse — increasing pain, spreading heat, swelling that worsens after day two, discharge or blistering — please also seek assessment from your GP or another appropriate healthcare professional rather than waiting to hear back from us.

Sun protection and ongoing skincare

  • Sun protection matters after microneedling. Once your skin can comfortably tolerate topical products, use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily.
  • A gentle sunscreen formulation is often better tolerated while the skin is still sensitive — many people find a mineral formula easier in the first week.
  • Do not force sunscreen onto skin that is extremely irritated or cannot tolerate topical products yet. Shade, a hat and avoiding deliberate sun exposure do the job until it can.
  • Return to your normal skincare gradually rather than all at once, keeping actives to the timings above.

Other skin treatments and your next session

Other facial and aesthetic treatments

About 4 weeks

Allow approximately four weeks before significant facial aesthetic treatments over the same area — chemical peels, significant resurfacing, laser and light-based treatments, and anything else likely to irritate recovering skin.

Not every gentle facial belongs in that category. If you are unsure whether something is suitable, ask us or your skin practitioner first.

Your next microneedling session

Generally at least 4 weeks apart

Where further microneedling is recommended as part of your treatment plan, sessions are generally spaced at least four weeks apart.

How many sessions suit you, if any, depends on your individual plan rather than a fixed course.
